The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of the Mid-Atlantic grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Foundation serves children who reside in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia.
A wish fulfilled creates a memorable experience for a child fighting a life-threatening medical condition and gives him or her something positive to think about instead of medical treatments and hospital visits.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic was founded in 1983 and has granted the wishes of over 7,000 children fighting life-threatening medical conditions such as cancer, pediatric AIDS, cystic fibrosis, Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy and heart disease.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic is affiliated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.
In 1980, seven-year-old Chris Greicius was being treated for leukemia but dreamed of becoming a police officer.
With the help of many individuals including a U.S. Customs Officer and a Public Safety officer, Chris’ wish was granted and he became a police officer for a day.
They saw how happy Chris was knowing his wish came true and thought that if one boy’s wish could create such happiness, maybe they could do the same for other children. The Chris Greicius Make-A-Wish® Memorial was founded - later known as the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
